Joel with Napoleon February 21, 2000
Arrived in Tel Aviv in the afternoon. Took a walk along the beach and recovered from jet lag.

February 22, 2000
We spent the day in Tel Aviv, visiting the Museum of the Diaspora, and the old city of Jaffa once conquered by Napoleon (l).


February 23, 2000
Picked up by our guide, Tal, who drove us to Zichron Yaakov (one of the first modern Jewish settlements in Israel, Haifa (international center of the Bahais, seen here), Akko (site of Crusader ruins), and Zippori (an ancient Roman city). Joel and Robin at the Bahai Shrine

February 24, 2000
We toured in the north, visiting Safed and the Golan Heights.

February 25, 2000
Visited Roman ruins at Beit Shean, and Jericho, the oldest town in the world. Drove up to Jerusalem and arrived before Shabbat.

February 26, 2000
Spent a quiet Shabbat in Jerusalem. Went to temple. Visited the Citadel of the old city. February 27, 2000
Took a walking tour of Jerusalem neighborhoods. Had a nice dinner at a Belgian restaurant overlooking the Old City.


February 28, 2000
Went to the Israel Museum and saw the Dead Sea Scrolls at the Shrine of the Book. Visited Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial.

Day trip to the Dead Sea, where we floated, and the desert oasis of Ein Gedi.

March 1, 2000
Made our pilgrimage to the Old City of Jerusalem, in the midst of a downpour of rain. Saw the Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa Mosque, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the Western Wall. In the evening, flew down to Eilat.


March 2, 2000
Wandered around in Israel's answer to Las Vegas. Took a Red Sea ride in a boat with a glass hull and watched the coral.

Crossed the border to Jordan. Drove to Wadi Rum, where we saw the desert. Stayed overnight at Bedouin village converted into an upscale hotel.

March 4, 2000
Saw Petra, the dramatic ruins of the rose city set in a dramatic canyon. Drove back to Jerusalem.

March 5, 2000
A final visit to the Western Wall, shopping and tourism in the New City. Left at 1:45 am for the long flight home.
